The University of Bedfordshire traces its origins back to the Bedford Training College, founded in 1882, pioneering early childhood education methods inspired by Friedrich Froebel. The university evolved significantly over the decades, becoming the University of Luton in 1992. In 2006, following a merger with the Bedford campus of De Montfort University, it was renamed the University of Bedfordshire, reflecting its broader regional presence.

As of 2025, the University of Bedfordshire ranks 129th in the UK (Complete University Guide and The Times & Sunday Times). The Guardian University Guide ranks it 122nd for 2025. Globally, it is positioned within the 1001–1200 range in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2024.
